Today is the last day of the festival, time for conclusions and lessons learnt. I have mixed feelings about it, I had both a great time and a lousy time. Let’s start with the good sides :) -films (we are here mainly because of them, right?) were well chosen and the programme was interesting inspite of the recession :) It was a fine idea to show older films! That proves ispiration and creativity are just as important as (if not more than) a huge budget. -Motovun is a nice setting for the festival. The weather was nice, the valleys green and the truffles and manestra wonderful :) -the guests – filmmakers, directors, etc. – who came to meet the public. It is a nice way of showing appreciation to the viewer :) -the staff, volunteers – most of the times :) -the photos in the daily bulletin :) Moving on to the less bright side of the story: -I believe too much importance was given to “free of charge” (screenings, accomodation in the camp…). It brought plenty of people who have nothing to do with movies and common sense for that matter. It made the camp look like an overflowing garbage site. And the lack of respect for the others didn’t show only there – talking and going in and out during the screenings, commenting nudity scenes like little children who cannot behave are just some of the examples. Drinking a beer, two, five is ok but I don’t agree to drinking till you cannot make the difference between a toilet and a cultural monument… The organisers chose quantity over quality, I guess it’s a better pay-off these days. -the fact that there were events that took place during that festival that were advertised yet not for the general public. Sure, I don’t expect to get the same treatment as the stars but all differences in the programme can be handled in a more elegant way. -I missed some good and relevant reviews of the movies shown. The presentations in the catalogue often had little to do with the actual films and there were virtually no reviews from competent people after the screenings with the exception of some attempts on nova tv –blog.hr initiative. Weren’t there any people studying art, film etc. here able to do since among the ones that waved “acreditations”? All in all, it wasn’t too bad, I don’t regret coming here but I’ll give it a better thought next time. Cheers, Oana :)
